Part III: Saying Goodbyes…
Scenes from the trauma flashed across his mind.
Drenched in blood, he could do nothing but hold her close.
Since then, room 502 had been her abode.
Every possibility attempted had failed miserably.
The vital stats gadget was her only support.
He sliced the cake humming, ‘joy to the world the Lord has come’
Gazing at her in peace, he gulped it bit by bit.
By the river Piedra by Paulo Coelho lay in front of him.
He unfolded the bookmarked page, and read it aloud,
“Yes, my mind was wandering. I wished I were there with someone who could bring peace to my heart, someone with whom I could spend a little time without being afraid that I would lose him the next day. With that reassurance, the time would pass more slowly. We could be silent for a while because we’d know we had the rest of our lives for conversation. I wouldn’t have to worry about serious matters, about difficult decisions and hard words.”
Tears rolled down as he read the lines.
He signed the consent papers he had hidden in his closet for months.
Kissing her hard for one last time, he turned off the vital stats switches and said goodbye….
And on that Christmas Eve, amidst all the lights and celebrations….HE LET HER GO!!!
